Governance, Leadership and Ethics

Students who will thrive in Huron’s new Major in Governance, Leadership & Ethics (GLE) recognize we live and work in an increasingly complex, interdependent and uncertain world. They understand, or are determined to understand, the need for new decision-making models and the influences of different leadership styles. They are keen to participate in civic affairs and contribute to the well-being of their local and global communities.

GLE is designed to help students fully grasp the challenges of contemporary governance and develop the know-how for leadership that is inclusive, accountable and effective. The goal of GLE is to develop Leaders with Heart who are able to meet the growing demand for ethical and transformative leadership in the private, public and non-profit sectors.

GLE Minor in Environmental Stewardship

The GLE’s Minor in Environmental Stewardship brings together different disciplinary perspectives on climate change and sustainability, examining governance, leadership and ethical issues arising over time at scales from the global to the local. Environmental Stewardship is a term that has deep historical roots and is now beginning to be used widely again in natural resources management and conservation, and urban governance and community sustainability practices. The GLE Environmental Stewardship Minor provides learning opportunities to integrate theory and practice, exploring the scientific and Indigenous knowledge systems, as well as the spiritual and ethical principles, and public policy frameworks, that inform environmental stewardship in the 21st century.

Special Topics Courses for Fall/Winter 2022 – 2023

The Governance, Leadership & Ethics program is pleased to offer two new, and exciting courses for the Fall/Winter 2022 – 2023 Academic year:

GLE 3003F – Special Topics in Leadership:  Historical Leaders (Fall 2022)

Historical Leaders:  This course provides an in-depth exploration of principled leadership as an ethical foundation for governance from a historical perspective. Through a series of case studies profiling historical leaders in politics, government, business, non-governmental organizations, and social movements, we will consider questions of ethical leadership and governance, innovative forms of leadership, the tension between principles and power, and the role of leaders, followers and constituents within a variety of organizations.

Faculty:  D. David Blocker, Assistant Professor

GLE 3001G- Selected Topics in Governance:  Policing, Community and Governance (Winter 2023)

This course focuses on the contemporary issues that underscore the challenging world of present-day policing. Some topics to be examined include international models of policing to trace the development of modern police response strategies in Canada; the organization and structure of policing in Canada; police community roles; police reform strategies in the wake of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement; and evidence-based policing etc. Students will explore the theoretical foundations of contemporary policing and the application of that research into practice through case studies, research articles and talks by police practitioners.

Faculty: Dr. Hina Jawaid Kalyal, Research Planner Analyst, London Police Service, London, ON

GLE 2004G-Environmental Stewardship (Winter 2023)

This new course responds to strong interest among GLE students for in-depth study of environmental stewardship, an urgent topic in meeting the 21st century challenge of climate change and sustainability. The course adopts an integrative approach situating environmental stewardship in relation to complex social and economic realities, examining the ways in which cooperation and connection are crucial to ecological preservation and solving global challenges. Students are introduced to stewardship frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and their local implementation in cities and communities, including London Ontario. The course is delivered through case studies, group activities, and community-based projects that bridge theory and practice. Students are encouraged to contribute to course content and delivery in blog posts and other forms of knowledge sharing.

Ethics
A central intellectual theme in GLE studies explores questions about the common good or public interest and how these ideals are contested and constructed through governance and leadership. Today’s societal “grand challenges”, from climate change to income inequality and systemic discrimination, all require collaborative solutions that combine the resources of public, private and nonprofit sectors. However, complex ethical issues arise through collective action as the various stakeholders represent different values, interests, and constituencies. GLE students explore enduring conflicts among rights, obligations, and community, and investigate how such tensions might be directed toward achieving collective well-being.
