  • Being a Don is kind of like having 35 younger siblings and being able to interact with them, not only to show them the ropes in some aspects, but also to learn from them and have really fun times together. Coming into the role, I didn’t really know exactly what to expect, but one aspect that I love about being a Don is that I am always entertained by my students. There is never a dull moment and even though I enjoy some more than others, I am truly never bored and I don't think there are many roles that can provide such a feeling.

  • Joining the Don Team was the greatest decision I made at university. I was provided with endless opportunities to be a leader amongst my peers while developing many transferable skills that will benefit me as I advance my career. Being a Don has allowed me to provide meaningful support to first-year students while making significant and memorable impacts on their university experiences.

  • I knew I wanted to be a Don since I was in high school. Being a Don has shown a completely new aspect of myself that I was unaware of. My first year students have grown to be my family and I learn new things from them every day. Being a Don is similar to looking after my younger siblings who are going through a crucial stage, similar to the one I was just recently in. I absolutely love being a Don.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Apply For Residence?

Once you have received an offer to attend Huron, you may apply for a spot in residence. The online application process begins at the end of March. See the “Residence Application” instructions above on this page and follow the directions. You will need your Western ID and PIN, and you must pay a deposit as part of the application process in order to be considered for a spot in residence. If you have any questions about the application process, please email housing@huron.uwo.ca.

What does ‘First-Come, First-Serve’ mean with regards to residence placements?

Applications are processed for residence on a first-come, first-served basis with completed applications including a paid deposit (time-stamped based on the time you’ve paid the deposit).

After applying, students will hear back about their application status in mid-June 2023 after the application is officially closed. Students will either be accepted or waitlisted depending on their application.

When is the Deadline to Apply for Residence?

Online applications will be accepted between the dates of March 27 and June 1 at 4:00 pm.

Is Residence Guaranteed and is it a Lottery System?

Residence is not guaranteed; however, with over 90% of our rooms dedicated to first-year students, we will do our best to accommodate your top 3 choices. Applications will be approved for placement based on a number of factors including a completed application (deposit received and all questions answered), and the date the application is received. The earlier you apply the more likely you are to receive a spot. Anyone who does not receive a room will be placed on a wait list and if or when rooms become available, students will be contacted from the top of the wait list and offered

How does the waitlist process work?

If you are an applicant who is placed on a waitlist, refunds may be given in the following circumstances:

  • A student is on the waitlist and withdrawals the application before being offered a space in a residence (includes affiliate campus residences);
  • A student is on the waitlist and is not offered a space in residence;
  • A student has a declined study permit application.

If you are an applicant who is placed on a waitlist and you decline the space offered to you, your name will go to the bottom of the waitlist where you will remain until we reach that point in the waitlist.

What Is the Difference Between Each Building?

Each of the residence buildings have some unique and distinctive aspects about them in terms of size, style, and types of rooms, as well as the placement of students to create specific communities within them. A brief description for each of these buildings can be found in the Student Life section of the website.

Southwest is made up of suite-style rooms that include 4 private bedrooms, 2 shared washrooms, a common seating area. Southwest is reserved for students with a high admission average and an interest in living in an Academic Learning Community. Students will be selected based upon their interest and entrance average, but placement in Southwest is a random lottery system through the online application program. Suitemate requests cannot be accommodated for Southwest.

Hellmuth Hall contains single and double rooms. If you prefer to live with a roommate, you can request this on your application. Common areas are located on each of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors, with a larger common area located on the ground floor. The Hellmuth residence is attached to one wing of the main campus building.

O’Neil/Ridley is our largest residence on campus. O’Neil/Ridley is made up of three floors, two wings per floor, and entirely single rooms. Students may wish to live in a “pod”, which is a cluster of single rooms with a shared washroom (between 4-7 students in each pod), accessible only to those students located in the pod area. Shared gender-specific washrooms are located on each floor in each wing, with a number of single gender-neutral washrooms also available for use.

Do I Need to Pay for a Meal Plan if I am Living in Residence?

Yes. It is a requirement for all students who live in residence to purchase a full meal plan.

Can I Choose My Roomate?

You may select a roommate (known to you) for placement in our double rooms in Hellmuth. Your selected roommate must also select your name to be matched as a roommate. All other requests (for instance, to live close to friends within the same residence) may be considered with the exception of Southwest. Due to the high demand and low number of rooms, placement in Southwest is a random allocation determined by the online application system. Suitemate requests will not be considered for the Southwest residence.

What Living Learning Communities Does Huron Residence Offer?

Huron currently has two Academic Learning communities available for students.

The Academic Learning Community, located in both Southwest and Hellmuth, is ideal for students who desire living arrangements that are most conducive to focus and quiet studying, as well as programming and floor events that promote academic success.

The Leadership Learning Community is ideal for students interested in student leadership opportunities and who plan to get involved in various clubs or student government while at Huron. In addition to our Learning Communities, students may also indicate an interest in living amongst non-drinking students (alcohol-free community), with students interested in volunteering or community engagement, or be placed amongst students that identify as allies of the LGBTQ2+ community.

We will do our best to place students in close proximity to one another who have identified any of these areas as preferable for living arrangements, in order to facilitate community development, or to giving priority to placement within requested Learning Communities.

How early will I know if I have a space in residence?

Huron Residence applicants will receive a status update on their applications in mid-June 2023.

What Do I Need To Do After Getting Accepted Into Residence At Huron?

Once your application has been received in full (all questions answered and deposit received) you will be sent a series of documents to read, sign electronically, and return to us in mid-June. Confirmation of your placement in residence will not be sent out until these documents have been returned via email.

The documents for review include the Residence Contract, Residence Handbook, Residence Discipline Code, and the Huron Promise, a pledge we have developed highlighting our expectations around behaviour and attitudes that reflect our commitment to diversity, acceptance, integrity, and community.

Room assignments will be communicated in mid- to late July and will be assigned via a random lottery system. We do our best to accommodate students in one of their top three room choices, but with limited rooms in some buildings, this is not always possible.  After submitting your application, if you wish to change your room preferences, please contact housing@huron.uwo.ca prior to June 1st 2023.

The Residence Handbook will include all the details you need to know about what you can and cannot bring with you into the Residence, and the most important information you need to be successful while living on campus. Throughout the summer, you will also receive various emails and notifications related to Move-In Day and O-Week. Please continue to check your UWO email as this will be the only form of communication from Housing moving forward.

How many rooms are in Huron’s residence?

Huron has just over 300 beds available on-campus for first year students.

What is the first year incoming student class number?

The Huron incoming first-year class is anticipated to be approximately 500 students. Many of our first-year students live locally in London or self-select to live Off-Campus during first-year.

Can I apply to Western’s residences?

Western does not typically accept first-year students from affiliate campus in their residences. Both Brescia University College and King’s University College have reserved a limited number of spaces for Huron first-year students in the event our applications have exceeded our number of spaces available on campus.

What is the move-in date? Can I move-in early?

The official move-in date for Huron’s Residence is scheduled for Sunday, September 3rd 2023. Additional information on this day will be communicated in the coming months. We encourage students to make arrangements to move-in on this date as we have the support of many student leaders and staff to assist with your move-in, as well as make for a memorable move-in day! Students moving to Huron from outside of Canada will receive additional information on Huron’s Welcome Week program, which occurs before this date.
